- After being crowned Feb. 24, Crofutt is now eligible to compete for Miss South Dakota in June. If she wins, she’ll be in the running for Miss America. “Being Miss SDSU has been an unbelievable experience so far. I love attending South Dakota State University and being a Jackrabbit,” said Crofutt, a 2010 Delano High School graduate. Crofutt’s decision to run for Miss SDSU came after a friend encouraged her to consider it. “I went into it to enjoy every aspect of the experience and have fun with it,” Crofutt said. “The best part was getting to meet the other girls in the pageant.”

- Snow season parking in Delano went into effect Nov. 1, and continues through April 1, 2013. No vehicles can be parked on any street, avenue, or alley between the hours of 2 and 7 a.m. This is regulated by city ordinance and enforced by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office.
- Ending poverty in Minnesota will be explored at Light of Christ Lutheran Church, 3976 County Line Road S. in Delano, Sunday, Nov. 4 at 9:30 a.m. Admission is free. Mike Gregory, a representative of “A Minnesota Without Poverty,” will speak on the statewide movement begun in 2001, to end poverty in Minnesota by the year 2020. This is an ecumenical and interfaith initiative. According to the 2010 census, nearly 600,000 Minnesotans live below the poverty level. One in four women over the age of 16 live in poverty. The event is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Ministry of Light of Christ Lutheran Church in Delano.

The "biggest and prettiest" pumpkin contest is set for Saturday, Sept. 29 at Apple Jack Orchards from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Upper Midwest Giant Pumpkin Growers. - The Delano Public Library, Delano Friends of the Library, and Delano Art Guild are seeking artists to display art and fine craftwork in its 27th annual Art Show, which will take place throughout the library from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 27 during regular library hours. All artists in the community, both young and old, professional and amateur, are urged to bring in two of their finest works to display during the show. This exhibit does not include photos, quilts, or any fiber arts, since the library has other exhibits planned for those types of art. Artwork should be brought to the library no later than Friday, Sept. 28 during regular library hours. Artists should also fill out a display form. Artwork must be ready to hang, or to be placed in small, low bookstands, otherwise it will not be displayed. If pieces are very fragile, notify the library staff when dropping them off. All artwork should be picked up no later than Monday, Nov. 5.

Fall Heritage Festival is coming up Sept. 22, sponsored by the Delano Area Chamber of Commerce and the Delano-Franklin Township Historical Society. The Fall Harvest Festival will take over downtown Delano Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Stop by to enjoy a bowl of chili, entertainment, live theater, numerous children’s activities, hay bale maze, and a pie-eating contest. Also, if you have a great chili recipe, you are encouraged to bring a crock pot of your specialty chili to the 2012 Fall Heritage Festival chili cook off. It’s free to sign up, and the winner will receive $100 in Delano Dollars. After being judged, the chili will be sold for $2 per bowl. All of the proceeds will go to a local non-profit organization.
The Delano Area Chamber of Commerce is also sponsoring a medallion hunt, with a prize package valued at more than $500.

Delano’s concerts in the park series will feature six bands

- All interested residents, businesses, and property owners are invited to an open house Tuesday, June 14, from 5 to 6:45 p.m. for a presentation of the draft Delano parks and trails plan. The open house is to solicit comments and suggestions on the plan. Later the same evening, the Delano Planning Commission will be reviewing the plan and holding a public hearing for public comment on the plan. The city asks people to attend if interested.
- An annual salad luncheon will be served at the Delano United Methodist Church, 3310 County Line Road, Tuesday, June 14. Serving will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the menu will include a variety of salads, bread sticks, bars, and beverages. Take out luncheons will be available.
- An annual pork chop dinner with pork chops grilled by members of the Delano Fire Department and served with all the trimmings and ice cream will be Thursday, June 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Delano Senior Center. The cost is $8 for one chop, and $10 for two chops. Music will be provided by Wally Pikal. Call the Delano Senior Center for a ride or for more information at (763) 972-0574.
- At Rieder Meat Market in Delano, not much has changed in 100 years, and that’s a good thing. “We do it the old-fashioned way,” owner Laurence “Bud” Rieder, Jr. said, pointing out his handwritten orders, steaks cut to customer preference, and a wooden desk in the corner that’s been around for at least 70 years.
- The third-annual River Street Jam with Butch Automatic will take place Saturday, June 4 from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on River Street in front of Dave’s Town Club, between Bridge and Railroad avenues. Advance tickets to the River Street Jam cost $10 and are available at the St. Peter’s School office, Dave’s Town Club, Delano American Legion, Crow River State Bank, and State Bank of Delano. Tickets will cost $15 at the door. This is a fundraiser for St. Peter’s Catholic School.

The Delano Jaycees' annual sandbox fill will be coming up Saturday, May 21. Sand will be delivered by the Jaycees within a five-mile radius of Delano with a minimum donation of $5 per wheel barrow being requested.

The Delano Sons of the American Legion will be hosting a Mothers Day omelet breakfast Sunday, May 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The first 75 mothers will receive a rose bush in honor of Mothers Day. Omelets are made-to-order along with pork sausage, hash browns, toast, juice, milk, and coffee. Tickets are $7 for adults and $4 for children. Proceeds to benefit the Delano American Legion baseball program.

Delano’s Old-Fashioned Christmas event Saturday, Dec 1, will showcase local artists and also be a fun-filled holiday event for families. Artists will exhibit and sell their works inside downtown businesses, and all other activities will take place in downtown Delano from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Delano Area Council for Arts and Culture welcomes the public to participate, and enjoy the artists’ creations.
